Why You Should Never Ignore Tooth Pain

Pain is the body’s signal that something is wrong. Toothache can quickly interfere with everyday life, making it difficult to sleep, eat, or even speak comfortably. While mild, occasional discomfort may be eased with over-the-counter painkillers, severe or persistent pain needs immediate dental care.

If your tooth pain is:

  • Severe or constant
  • Worsening despite pain relief
  • Accompanied by swelling of the gums or face

…it’s time to see an emergency dentist right away.

Common Causes of Tooth Pain

Common Causes of Tooth Pain

Toothache can arise from many different dental or medical conditions. The most frequent causes include:

  • Tooth decay (cavities) – bacteria break down the enamel and dentine
  • Cracks or chips – even small fractures allow bacteria to enter the tooth
  • Lost or damaged fillings/crowns – leaving the tooth unprotected
  • Inflamed tooth pulp – infection inside the tooth (pulpitis)
  • Receding gums – exposing sensitive roots

Other causes that may mimic or trigger tooth pain:

  • Gum ulcers
  • Wisdom teeth eruption or impaction
  • Damaged wisdom teeth
  • Sinus inflammation
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) injury
How We Treat Tooth Pain at Thousand Smile Dental Clinic in London

How We Treat Tooth Pain at Thousand Smile

Because toothache has many possible causes, the first step is always a thorough examination and diagnosis. X-rays may be taken if needed. Treatment is then tailored to the cause of your pain:

  • Tooth decay → The decayed area is removed, and the tooth is filled.
  • Broken or missing fillings/crowns → Old restorations are removed, any decay is treated, and a new filling or crown is placed.
  • Abscess (infection) → The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, the pus is drained, and antibiotics may be prescribed if the infection is severe. A root canal is usually required to fully clear the infection and save the tooth.
  • Root canal treatment → Performed under local anaesthetic, the infected pulp is removed, the root canal is cleaned and filled, and the tooth is sealed with a crown for strength. This usually requires two appointments.

Our aim is always to relieve your pain quickly and preserve your natural tooth whenever possible.
